My wife says DengCoy (referring to his art) is both strange and funny in a (Frank) Kafkaesque and (Juan) Luna-tic way (pardon the pun). Does that classify him as QUEER, I ask. She says maybe. Does his art define who he is or does the world that has shaped him into who he is define his art? She is not sure.
What she is sure of -- having DengCoy pick through her thoughts and illustrate her columns way back during her sophomoric penpushing days -- is one great creative experience she has learned much from and will forever be grateful for.
Many decades after, she tells me, "Yeah, I was juvenile...but DengCoy, he bled. He was so real -- as frighteningly real as it could get (and as painfully true as it had to be). His art was your lens through which the world can be viewed sans hypocrisy or sanctimoniousness. No one picks the mind of this man. We're lucky (and privileged enough) to have his art to digest."
Meanwhile enjoy his other side.👇The funny DENGCX.😉
These two one-pagers about RoxLee are but mini-homages to him for being there for us.
Atsaka pinapautang ako niyan noong wala akong kapera-pera noong estudyante pa ako.😂

“Unang Sweldo” is not really about the sweldo — it’s about that desire to be a part of JINGLE
together with my hinahangaang mga cartoonists and writers.
MIEL DEFINED: Looking through the lens. |
I am truly priviledged to have given the breaks to long-time friend DM, who has evolved into a topnotch global cartoonist/artist/painter all rolled into one. He started out in Jingle... batambata
